Basic Elements of a Successful Personal-Professional Website:

Good things to Include:

  • An interesting, descriptive Title for your website as a whole.

  • Navigation to each section of your website, especially if it's more than one page.

  • Your Name, Photo and Bio.

  • Short summary of your website's Purpose and Contents.

  • Text and Photos, logically arranged into pages.

  • Other Media as needed.

  • Description of your Specialties or Services.

  • Credits (always acknowledge sources.)

  • Footer, including an email Contact Address, Credit and copyright information, and the Address of your homepage.

Good things to Avoid:

  • Pictures or text of an informal or private nature, that don't match the overall professional tone of the site. Humor is fine, but keep the family pictures, candid shots and pet photos on another, truly "personal" homepage.

  • Personal contact information, other than email. Use your work postal address or phone if necessary, but avoid sharing your home address or phone with the world.

  • Too much information on a single page. Visitors will be discouraged by pages requiring endless scrolling, or by too-many or too-large graphics and media that cause long load times.
