Ophaug, Wencke. Vowel migration and equalisation in classical singing. UNIPUBforlag, oslo. Acta Humaniora no.66/ 1999. ISBN 0806-3222. The author asks: "In what ways are classical singing special? In this Ph.D thesis acoustic properties of sung and spoken vowels are compared. It is proposed that singers have to find a balance between musical demands related to voice quality and timbre on the one hand and vowel intelligibility on the other, while in speech only the latter counts. This study extends its scope and looks into contrastive differences between vowels, sung and spoken by Norwegian and German singers. In addition to acoustical studies, listening experiments were performed to get an insight into the criteria that listeners apply to judge sung vowels as native. Several suggestions are given which may help singers to develop strategies for singing foreign languages." The author may be contacted at wencke.ophaug@german.uio.no .
